A year after meeting and filming Giuseppe and Lucia, I returned to Sardegna to deliver a completed copy of my work to them on VHS tape. At the time they were living and working in Quartu, Sant’Elena, as it was still early in the year and their studio in Villasimius was not yet open.

I surprised them with a written transcript of the English portion of the film in Italian so they could read along as they watched the film. I always thought that someday I would like to make an Italian version of the film, but I don’t know if that will ever happen now.

I met Lucia first at her home, and then shortly after Giuseppe joined us for lunch. Before he arrived Lucia started watching the film unable to wait for Giuseppe. Although I knew she couldn’t understand it all, I also could see that she was genuinely pleased with what she saw and heard and that made me happy.

After lunch I left with Giuseppe to his studio and saw some of the amazing work he was doing.

Ever the artist he was completing pieces that were completely different from those he had shown me just a year before. The masks had his own unique style and were even further removed from the look of traditional sardinian masks.

It has been a long time since I have seen Giuseppe and Lucia, I hope to catch up with them when I return to Sardinia in May. Who knows what creative path Giuseppe will have followed but you can bet he will be quietly working away and that together they still are like the sun and the moon.

If anyone would like a mask by Giuseppe, please contact me and I will see if I can make it happen.
